2016 Moorooroo Shiraz

The 2015 Moorooroo caused a stir with 99 points in the 2019 James Halliday Wine Companion among many other notable accolades and praises, now it’s time for the 2016 vintage to shine.

The 2016 Moorooroo recently picked up it’s own 99 points from James Halliday in the 2020 Wine Companion and earnt its place on the ‘Best of the Best’ list in the Shiraz category. Previously it also won a GOLD medal at the 2019 Syrah du Monde International Wine Competition and was awarded second place overall proving that this vintage will live up to the high expectations of it’s predecessors.

The reputation of the Moorooroo Shiraz has steadily grown momentum among wine collectors and enthusiasts with each vintage consistently displaying a refined quality that reflects a sense of time and place. With anticipation building prior to each vintage becoming available the Moorooroo Shiraz often sells out within a few months of being released.

A Reputation Built on History.

This generous Shiraz comes from precious vines planted in 1847 by Johan and William Jacob. There are only four rows left of these irreplaceable vines after a twist of fate saw Ed Schild’s tractor breaking down saving them from being destroyed as part of the Vine Pull Government Incentive Scheme in the mid-80s. This has led them to become some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world earning their regal status as ‘Ancestor Vines’ in the Barossa Old Vine Charter.

Since then these beautifully gnarled vines have been nurtured by the Schild family, who take great pride in being the current custodians of this historic piece of the Southern Barossa.

As one of the largest family-owned grape growers in the Barossa Valley, Schild Estate pride themselves on a philosophy that embraces an absolute synergy between grape-growing and wine-making.

Michael Schild, Head Vigneron, expertly tends to the vineyard throughout the year, overseeing the hand-picking of grapes from these Ancestor Vines. Combined with Scott Hazeldine’s artisan wine-making, the shiraz is traditionally open fermented and then matured in new and seasoned French oak.
